Teatro São Luiz

São Luiz Theatre is a privileged meeting space for art and the city’s inhabitants who look for a way to enjoy themselves in a sophisticated way. Offers visitors a varied programme made up of theatre, dance, music shows and literary readings.

Under the aegis of actor Guilherme da Silveira, this theatre was inaugurated in 1894 with the name Teatro Dona Amélia. Renamed Teatro da República in 1910, it later came to be known as Teatro São Luiz following the death of one of its principal patrons, the Viscount of São Luiz de Braga. Its activities are spread out among three spaces – the Luís Miguel Cintra Theatre, an Italian-style auditorium suitable for large scale productions; the Winter Garden, a versatile and more informal space; and the Mário Viegas Studio, a multi-use venue.

Accessibility

VISITORS WITH REDUCED MOBILITY

Teatro São Luiz is fully accessible for wheelchair-users and people with buggies, except for the first and second balconies. There is a lift next to the main entrance which takes visitors up to the upper floor (1: Winter Garden, 1st class boxes) and its two basement floors (-1: Men’s Toilets, -2: Women’s Toilets). All toilets are accessible to visitors with reduced mobility.

DEAF AND HEARING IMPAIRED VISITORS

Some theatre shows which are co-produced with the Teatro São Luiz, are interpreted into Portuguese Sign Language in a special performance. The dates of these performances are published in the theatre’s press and on the São Luiz website. Deaf visitors should book their seats, at least a week in advance, by sending an email to bilheteira@teatrosaoluiz.pt in order to ensure seats with a good view of the interpreters.
