Built between 1521 and 1523, it belonged to the family of Afonso de Albuquerque and was considerably damaged by the earthquake and by the passage of time. Its rehabilitation in 1981 helped restore the building to its original dimensions and revive the splendour of one of Lisbon’s most original façades. The upper floors of the building have housed the Fundação José Saramago since 2008, while the lower floor contains the Archaeological Centre, which is comprised of a long duration exhibition space and an archaeological site.
